I met Samuel when he led a discernment process for the Interfaith Hospitality Network Board back a few years ago. He was so gracious, spirit filled and made us better with his ability to get us out of the box with future planning. As board president, I got to know him as a person and his depth of feeling for others came through to me. He was special. I was blessed by knowing him.

Comment on War is not the Answer–to ISIS or Cancer by David Hicks http://samuelmahaffy.com/2016/03/war-is-not-the-answer-to-isis-or-cancer/#comment-415 Mon, 14 Mar 2016 16:33:04 +0000 http://samuelmahaffy.com/?p=1989#comment-415 Maximizing feels good. Vigorous offense seems right. Dramatic confrontation breathes dominance. Obliteration promises a clean slate tomorrow. BUT relying on individual hormonal surges rather than group cohesion puts too much credibility in reflexive.
physiological autonomic mechanisms. Peace is incremental, soul-driven, focused on remedy, integrative, flexible, and prudent. Peace requires prolonged application of our ‘higher powers’, however defined. Bellicosity is a primitive brain stem behavior, allied to rage, fright, and death. We need enough compassion and trust to invest our survival and prosperity in our precious fellow voyagers.

Cultural cacophony is a chronic stressor, and thus inhibits and distorts meaningful attempts at relational intimacy. Loudness, especially chronic and targeted loudness, is disruptive and disorienting. Meaningful discourse requires abundant silences, for reflection and respect, to allow revelations to thoroughly wash over our souls. Meaning is fragile and requires vulnerability in the listener. The precious is easily torn by the strident, depth is fractured by the insatiable ego.

As usual, Samuel, you have captured the delicious essence of living in relationship. Actually living without soul-nourishing relationships is mere existence, and thus tedious and enervating. Your phenomenal courage and sturdy rationality have been the bright lamps which have guided your confident steps over these years of travail. I am blessed by your insistence on another paradigm, another model, another anchor.

Comment on A Charmed Life with Advanced Cancer: Living into the Great Dance by Anne Radford http://samuelmahaffy.com/2016/01/a-charmed-life-with-advanced-cancer-living-into-the-great-dance/#comment-406 Tue, 26 Jan 2016 15:06:45 +0000 http://samuelmahaffy.com/?p=1962#comment-406 Samuel, your writing is so beautiful. The phrase ‘Cancer is not a war to be fought–it is a grace to be found’ is something that resonated particularly with me as I am finding out who I am now after a year’s treatment for cancer. The sense of coming into a state of grace is very present with me as I move from one moment to another. Thank you for being so eloquent and for sharing this writing with the rest of us.
